A year after Jason Moran graduated (1993) from the Houston's High School for the Perf. & Vis. Arts, his family began a scholarship program. It served as a thank you for the support Jason received from the amazing school and to also foster talent in the following years. The first winner in 1994 was Eric Harland. Eric has gone on to play with many of the A-List in Jazz such as Betty Carter, McCoy Tyner, Joe Henderson, Terrance Blanchard,Michael Brecker, Charles Lloyd and was also on Moran's debut. The next two winners were saxophonist Joseph Berryman (1995) and bassist Lenny Zieben (1996). There was a five year hiatus until 2001 when Jason began administering the scholarship. Audition tapes were implemented and Jason would offer criticisms and encouragement to the students. In 2001 the winner was trumpeter Brandon Lee. From 2002-2004, the award expanded to include juniors. The junior was given an award to attend a summer institution just as Jason did at Eastman. In 2002 the winners were drummer Jamire Williams (senior) & saxophonist Scott McGinty (2002) and in 2003 - saxophonist Kyle Wilson (senior) & trombonist Corey King (junior). The 2004 award was recently awarded to saxophonist William Cleary (senior) and drummer Dustin Kaufamn (junior). Congratulations to all of the musicians.
